“The Host”

January 18, 2010

In response to a question I had received, yes, I have read The Host by Stephanie Meyer. For those who do not know, this is by the author who wrote the Twilight series and it is her adult novel.

My thoughts on it are varied. I liked it. I thought it was an interesting idea. The premise of the novel is that a sentient life form has arrived on earth and in trying to make the world a better place, has taken over human beings. They attach to our nerves/spinal cord/brain. Something like that. And naturally, there are groups of humans who don’t agree with this. GASP! Well, one of these Hosts is attached to a woman who won’t give up her mind without a fight. Which leads the Host to take the girl in search of her brother and lover.

In an effort not to ruin the rest of the plot, I’ll stop here. Like I said, I did like it. But it was really hard to get through the first half. There isn’t much action and it’s a lot of semi-psychoanalysis and conversation between Host and human. It was hard to get into the book and I had to force myself to keep reading. But it was worth it, I believe, once the characters actually started moving on their convictions and beliefs. And I liked how it ended. It was a good, happy ending that was also surprisingly satisfying, compared to Meyer’s other ending. If you enjoyed the Twilight series, I think this is a good weekend read. Or month-long read. It is a pretty thick book. And I think it did take me about a week to read. So, depending on how long it takes you and if you can push yourself to the quicker-paced part then, I say “go for it!”
